Any Windows Kernel Guys Listening? - [9:51 AM]
Chris Pirillo: "Now Microsoft has worked directly with two companies who at the very least claim to hold the UNIX code. Microsoft has also been known to throw money about on a whim when it suits them (read original Xbox and Zune… sometimes they even make some money from it). Microsoft also has need of a much more stable Code Base for the next major iteration of Windows." - Let's get one thing, just one little thing, clear. The Windows NT(2000/XP/2k3/Vista) Kernel is a solid piece of work, get past the conspiracy theory crap that using the Linux or Unix as the underpinning to Windows would somehow make it magically work better.
Please, if there's a Windows Kernel guy out there that thinks I'm full of caca please chime in and straighten me out. During a contracting period of my life I got the chance to work with the file system team and I saw the kernel and file system in action, up close, in isolation. Unless something really scary has happened inside Microsoft and they've gone crazy and started hacking up the Kernel bits in some strange way I'd be confident to run it as the base of any operating system, on any platform. Fix the security model, start over with a new GUI experience, but I believe it could be built on the NT Kernel.
So, please, please, please straighten me out if I'm barking up the wrong tree. I'd welcome it.
