Can I do this?

I don't know about you but I like to use pieces of images at times on this site. I may make a small picture out of a piece of another just because I like the way it fits a post, but I'd rather not have to create a new image. So I was wondering if there is anyway to create a "view" into an existing image? I'd like to be able to specify the X, Y, Width, and Height to use for a viewport into an image. Something like...

< img border="0" src="http://www.crabapples.net/artwork/misc/uncleSamIWantYouWithViewport.gif" viewx="20" viewy="20" viewwidth="100" viewheight="100">

Or something like that. Where viewx and viewy specify the x and y offsets for the viewport origin and viewwidth and viewheight are the width and height for the viewport. Below is a graphical example of what I'm talking about. The faded area is the original picture. The area that is not faded, around the face, represents the viewport into the original image. Make sense?

So please tell me, does something like this exist today and if so how do I use it? Thanks!

Movie line of the week answer

Well yesterday's movie line wasn't a big hit. I got two answers, one of them incorrect. Sigh.

The correct answer is...

Independence Day

You know that movie with Will Smith as a fighter pilot trying to save the world. He says "Welcome to Earth" when he smacks the dreadlocked alien pilot, right after their spectacular crash in the desert.

Our winner is Mr. Ben Padilla!

Fresno/Visalia are #36...

On the list of sweatiest cities compiled by Old Spice my favorite California city, Visalia, ranks #36, DOH! Oh come on! It's only 91 degrees outside right now!

I know that's more than you really wanted to know, isn't it?

I was just took a look back at my entry from a year ago today, it's a fun one! That phone number now belongs to Ameritrade, and option #7 is no longer an option. DARN!

We were also experiencing rolling blackouts at the time. It's so hard to believe it's been a year!

Sorry folks, outage today!

This morning when I went to post this message I discovered that my servers FTP service had gone bye-bye. Hopefully RC and I will have it up and running by around lunch, when we go to grab grub!

Roll film!Movie line of the week

That's right kiddies, it's movie line time. I'm struggling for a line today! I usually know what I'm going to use by Wednesday, but not this week. DOH! So after a huge internal struggle I give you...

Welcome to Earth!

Ok, quick, what movie! Send your guesses here.

Thanks Steve

Mr. Steve Pilgrim understands what I was trying to say yesterday. I have a hard time putting in words what's swirling around in my head. That's why I started this site. To become a better writer. I don't think it's working.

Thanks for your support Steve, you did a much better job of saying what I was trying to say! In my humble opinion "Political Correctness" has become a substitute for God. It's our flawed attempt at making a set of guidelines that will make the world a better place.

Here's a verse to go with yesterday's post.

The wicked watches the righteous, And seeks to slay him. - Psalms 37:32
That is al Queda. They want to kill you and me because we're American (I'm not saying being American equals being righteous BTW). Nothing more, nothing less. Sad isn't it?

Discrimination and profiling at the border

Well my brother has called me to task over comments made this morning. You are correct sir, profiling is discriminatory. Don't you think we should be discriminatory when it comes to our borders? I know that may sound horrible but in light of September 11 it makes sense. Entrance into this nation should be awarded only after a thorough background check of the person requesting asylum. Hey I'm not talking about profiling citizens of the U.S. and we should continue to welcome folks with open arms, but we shouldn't do it with our eyes closed.

Web Matrix

If you have the .NET Framework installed, or would like to install it, and you'd like to see an example of a beautifully designed .NET based application look no further than Web Matrix! This application is the perfect tool for creating ASP.Net pages and it's written in 100% managed C#! Woo-Hoo!

I installed it earlier and was able to create a form and test it in just a few minutes. It's fast and easy to use; that's right, I said FAST. I hope to have a new contact form created for this site soon and it'll be created using Web Matrix. I'm getting sick of the spammers harvesting my e-mail addresses!

Well done Web Matrix team, and thanks RC for the heads-up!

Dennis Miller

I don't know if you caught Dennis Miller on Leno last night but he was in great form! Jay pretty much turned it over to Dennis who proceeded to go off about terrorism for 10-15 minutes. He made some good points, and of course had me laughing the whole time. His points on profiling really hit home. He wasn't talking about profiling of folks that were born and raised in this country, no sir. He was talking about profiling people that come into this country from know terrorist states. Makes perfect sense to me. Is that discriminatory? I honestly don't think so. We have a great nation with wonderful freedom and I'd like to keep it that way. Keeping potential problems away from the country is a good start.

He picked on the ACLU a little bit. He said the ACLU should form their own airline that doesn't inspect people and baggage. Would you fly with them?

File-served TV!

This is the best idea I've heard in a long time regarding a video-on-demand system. Why not use a TiVO to distribute VOD? I like it, I like it a lot. But of course there's that whole piracy thing again. Some idiot will of course take advantage of that type of system and sell copies out his back door. Personally I think it would be a great way to distribute movies! Blockbuster should sign a deal with TiVO to do just that. I think it would be great to have access to the entire Blockbuster video library and navigate it with a nice UI on a TiVO. Then select what you want, pay your $3.20 (or whatever it is), and be able to store as many movies on the unit as will fit. When you want to see something else and don't have the space you have to give up one of your downloaded videos. Simple.

More interesting stuff department

Well I'd love to link to the articles I read in my current issue of Business 2.0 but I can't find them in electronic form. It has a great article on Barry Sonnenfeld, director of MIB 2 amongst other things, and a nice little story by David F. Gallagher on his battle to make David Gallagher #1 on Google.

Fortune has a great article on Blogger and Ev.

On this day a year ago.

Blogger problems

There no telling when this will actually get published. I'm having problems with Blogger. I keep getting a 0x80072efd error from MSXML3.dll when publishing, which appears to be a "Cannot connect to the Internet server." error. Interesting? Does that mean it can't find my server or it can't find one of its' own?

Spidey crawlin' up a wallSpidey

Yesterday my youngest daughter took me to lunch and a movie for Father's day! Woo-Hoo! It was a great! I got to eat at my favorite place in the world, El Rosal, got to see Spider-Man, and to top it off I got to play softball last night! What a day!

I've heard mixed reviews of Spider-Man but I absolutely loved it! I think it was better that Star Wars AOC, but that's just my humble opinion.

Happy Birthday Ned!

Mr. Batchelder turned the big FOUR-OH yesterday! So Happy Belated birthday Ned!

Dave Winer hospitalized!

I visited Scripting on Saturday only to find no postings? Weird. Dave seems to post like a madman every single day! Well come to find out, via Scoble who found out via John Robb, that Dave is in the hospital! Oh my, that's not good. It looks like he's going to be there at least a week. Details are few, but were we given a clue that something was wrong on Friday with this post? I'm referring to the bottom paragraph which states "Lots of non-Internet stuff going on." Take care Dave, hope to read you soon!
