Vista good for Linux? - [9:11 AM]

Slashdot: "XYZ Computing has an article hypothesizing that the arrival of Windows Vista may be a big opportunity for Linux to make headway on the desktop." - I can't really see this happening myself. I've been living on a steady diet of Linux with KDE(which I love BTW) for six months and it's not anywhere close to the Windows of Mac desktop.

RibbitHaving said that I'm becoming a HUGE fan of Linux in spite of my early troubles. It's hard to explain the power afforded a developer. I think that may be the key, and the trouble, associated with Linux adoption on the desktop. It's still very much a gearhead operating system. Extremely powerful but not overly friendly. When normal everyday folks can insert a CD with Linux on it, install the OS and GUI of their choice, and run without EVER opening a shell Linux may become a threat on the desktop.

There are still so many things I'd like to explore I'm reaching the point of overload. Compilers, dynamic languages, operating systems and applications swirl about my head at different times throughout the day. Couple that with my day job and sometimes I'm a bit crippled in my thinking, which I can NOT afford right now.

Sigh...

This weeks movie line came from a very recent film, one of this summer big blockbusters.

Our winner is Mr. John "Go Visio" Marshall, congratulations John!

The correct answer is...

Thanks for playing, come back next week!

Potter and audioblogging? - [11:05 AM]

HPANA: "Podcasting, the act of recording audio and publishing it for use with Apple's iPod and other portable media devices, has hit the Harry Potter world by storm." - Looks like I'll have something new to listen to at work.

Libraries and audiobooks - [11:02 AM]

CNN: "Rather, public libraries from New York City to Alameda, California, are letting patrons download Tom Clancy techno-thrillers, Arabic tutorials and other titles to which they can listen on their computers or portable music players -- all without leaving home." - Sweet! We may have to get our next Potter book this way!

Movie line of the week - [11:27 AM]

You gotta love the movies. You'll have to forgive the length of today's movie line, but I loved the exchanges between these two characters throughout the entire film. Here's hoping there's more of the same in the future.

Ready, set, guess...

Actor #1: Bulletproof?
Actor #2: Anything but straight shots. So what's your interest in it, Mr. [Actor #1]?
Actor #1: I wanna borrow it for... spelunking.
Actor #2: Spelunking?
Actor #1: Yeah, you know, cave diving.

Ok, quick, what movie! Send your guesses here.

BIG - [1:09 PM]

Mike Stall's .NET Debugging Blog: "Visual Studio is over 43 million lines of code, there are over 30 teams working on different pieces, with roughly 700 developers checking-in code to 11 different virtual build labs that are then integrated on a rotating schedule producing over 100 different builds of the product daily." - Ahhh, the joys of complex systems. VS.Net is HUGE and growing daily, but it's still the best IDE, to date, I've ever used.

Top 10 dot-com flops - [2:33 PM]

MSN: "The most astounding thing about the dot-com boom was the obscene amount of money that was spent. Zealous venture capitalists fell over themselves to invest millions in Internet start-ups; dot-coms blew millions on spectacular marketing campaigns; new college graduates became instant millionaires (albeit on paper) and rushed out to spend it" - Hey... I remember most of these, at least 8 out of 10.

I'll think we'll see a whole new round of busts because of all the hubbub surrounding Podcasting. Trying to make a business out of a hobby is probably going to go down in flames.

60GB media player - [10:17 AM]

Engagdet: "The top of the line model will be the F60, with 60GB of storage space, which will retail for $549 ($50 less than the iPod Photo), with support for MP3 and WMA audio files, JPG viewing via the big 2.2-inch 32k color QVGA 240x320 LCD screen, and it will be controlled by a funky looking plus-shaped touch sensitive control." - Wowzer! How do I convince my wife we need something like this?

We could jam all of our Harry Potter audio books on this and then some. Makes road-tripping a bit easier since we wouldn't have to carry around our CD cases full of audio books.

Farewell SaveDisney - [10:05 AM]

Tiggers are wonderful things!Intercot: "It's been a while since last I wrote to you about how much nicer Disneyland has been looking lately, and as you probably know, a lot has happened in that time... maybe the single most important thing being that we here at SaveDisney have come to an agreement with the new management at the Walt Disney Company regarding our mutual relationship.

Accordingly, on August 7th, we will permanently close down this website... with regrets, of course, but also with the satisfaction that it has served its purpose... to inform and educate all of you about the future of the Disney legacy."
- Sorry to see you go. I think having someone on the outside, as a watchdog, really helped.

You're off to a good start, but far from being complete. Here's to the continued recovery of Disney.
