N.Y. Pork Butt - [10:00 AM]

Megnut: "This weekend is the 4th Annual Big Apple BBQ Block Party. Yum! I can't wait. Last year 4000 lbs of pork butt was consumed." - If I could quit my job today and open a BBQ restaurant, I'd do it. I love BBQ and there's nothing better than BBQ'd pork.

Movie line of the week - [10:23 AM]

Today's line comes from a classic comedy adventure. I'm pretty sure this was one of the first films I ever saw on VHS.

Anywho, here's the line, good luck!

Do be careful! Don't lose any of that stuff. That's concentrated evil. One drop of that could turn you all into hermit crabs.

Ok, quick, what movie! Send your guesses here.

One down... - [9:30 AM]

CNN: "The U.S.-led coalition's most wanted man in Iraq was killed Wednesday evening in a U.S. airstrike on a safe house near Baquba, according to U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Bill Caldwell." - One down, about a zillion nutters to go.

Trolling for OPML - [3:00 PM]

Someone at Microsoft seems to have some interest in a very old post about converting OPML to Visio VDX files. It's super simple, and Visio should just support it if it doesn't already.

All I did was write a little Visual Basic application that created a CSV file from the OPML, started Visio and ran the Org Chart Add-On(with command line options pointed at the CSV file) to generate the drawing, then saved as VDX. Internal to the Visio team they have a nice little component one could use to auto generate VDX without ever showing the Visio user interface. It could be perfect for creating backended web services that spit out all kinds of drawings.

Who knows, they may already be doing that very thing. I haven't talked to anyone in a VERY long time. I don't even know how Visio 12 looks or behaves, shame on me!

Hey, if any of my old cronies read this, I miss you all!

Telecommuting is misunderstood - [9:52 AM]

Mercury News: "HP cuts back on telecommuting" - Bummer. A lot of companies cannot see the benefit, too many "old-timers" that need to move on. I'm not sure how old this fella is but we'll probably discover he's in his late 50's or early 60's. Old guys tend to think you have to be on site to be productive, they're also the guys with the trophy assistants (you know what I mean, pretty 20-something's). Anywho... bad news for HP.

At a time when gas is sky rocketing, and our dependency on foreign oil is at an all time high, I would think companies that had the capability to allow their folks to stay home(read as any high tech company) and work would take advantage of it. It's my understanding Adobe embraces telecommuting, and at one point Apple did the same thing. I was VERY productive while telecommuting at Visio. You have to have management that's willing to adapt a little to make it work, but it's totally doable. My boss at Visio was fantastic when it came to dealing with me being 1000+ miles away. We used some old-school technology called the telephone, it worked great, and we managed to crank out tons of code.

Ok, so Mott isn't a 50 something. He's 49, but he was with Wal-Mart for 22 years, that should tell you something. He's doesn't get "it".

The Mac is in the mail - [12:39 PM]

Apple LogoYesterday my lovely wife ordered Haileigh her MacBook. We went with the 13-inch, white, 1.83GHz model and upgraded it to 1GB of ram. It should be here by the middle of next week.

I'm sure this will be Haileigh's next purchase.
