Extreme Pumpkin Carving - [8:39 AM]

Carved Frankie PumpkinVillafane Studios: [via Steven Vore] "Picking out the right pumpkin is very important. You need a pumpkin with a thick wall. To get this kind you will have to choose one that is very heavy for its size. Also avoid perfectly round pumpkins and opt for ones that have a protruding ridge that sticks out on one side. These shapes make nice faces as you could imagine how difficult it would be to carve a 3-D face onto a shallow flat surface." - I've always thought our home carved pumpkins were impressive, but this is just incredible.

Honest look at performance - [2:14 PM]

John Gossman: "However, when doing performance analysis I discovered we were allocating and freeing huge numbers of these arrays of steps. I traced it to an implementation that looked something like this:" - I love that John is sharing his findings right out in the open. Sparkle is a big deal for Microsoft, it's the first 'real' application from Microsoft using only the .NET framework and C#; ok, ok, it does have one PInvoked function, but I think that's super impressive and a great proof of new technology.

I love this time of year - [8:47 AM]

Scared PunkinHarvest time, fall. It's one of my favorite times of the year. Fall is the gateway to the holiday season, time for family "get togethers". We carve pumpkins, and decorate the porch in fall colors. We'll do all kinds of stuff between now and the end of the year. This weekend I'm hoping we'll be able to take our annual trip to Vossler Farms and explore their 2006 corn maze.

Yippee!

Is Habeas Corpus important, you decide. - [7:46 AM]

Crooks and Liars: "And before we reduce the very term 'habeas corpus' to something vaguely recalled as sounding kinda like the cornerstone of freedom, or maybe kinda like a character from 'Harry Potter,' we thought a Countdown Special Investigation was in order."

A Lemony End - [8:50 AM]

Seattle PI: "But Snicket's real-life alter ego, author Daniel Handler, confesses it is 'with a bittersweet sigh' that he bids adieu to the internationally best-selling series that made his pen name more famous than he is."

Mr. Potter - [7:51 AM]

Harry Potter, the boy who lived! The writing on this site has been very depressing as of late. Time to post something fun. I'm still a major Harry Potter freak and try to keep up with the news regarding our favorite boy wizard and his merry gang.

So, that said, here are some fun reads.

Enjoy!

Dare's Dad, President of Nigeria? - [10:36 AM]

Dare Obasanjo: "Last week I got an email from someone at Microsoft asking if my dad was the president of Nigeria. I almost deleted the email without responding until I looked at the person's email signature and it said 'Executive Assistant to Bill Gates'. So I responded and it turned out that Bill Gates was going to be in Nigeria over the weekend to meet with my dad and he wanted to chat before his trip." - The world gets smaller and smaller every day, doesn't it?
