Movie line of the week answer - [8:28 AM]

Well, it looks like yesterday's line was a success! I'm glad folks are still participating in my little game. Thanks.

Our BIG winner was Mr. Christopher Ledoux, congratulations Chris!

The correct answer was...

Kudos to John Marshall for pointing out the duplicate movie line, whoops!

Huh? - [8:10 AM]

Got tape?Jason Kolb [via Nick Hodges]: "The language and platform no longer matter, it’s just the end result now. In fact, more than which operating system or language is used, it’s now the ability to scale on an as-needed basis that is the primary requirement for applications." - That statement I agree with, but the five steps miss the boat. The first two especially miss the boat. You can't right the ship by giving away .NET and Windows. I don't know the answer but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't work, let's see if Sun can pull out of their funk by giving away their technology. The thing that I'd like to see is .NET released on the Mac and Linux, fully blown .NET. It's the new "OS", for lack of a better word. It's the abstraction between the developer and the OS and The Mono Project has proven it's possible. If I could write applications to one runtime and a unified library, in the language of my choice, that's very powerful.

Languages like Ruby and Smalltalk are where it's at today, hey, have you considered Boo? The Smalltalkers have known it for years! Productivity and flexibility over coder machismo. A good friend, and co-worker, Richard, is doing a bunch of work at Pelco in Ruby and has fallen head-over-heals in love with it. It's not the first time I've heard that story about Ruby.

Freezing - [7:32 AM]

Brrrrrrrrr!!!!Visalia Times Delta: "Citrus growers are making last-minute preparations to help minimize potential damage to their crops when a cold-air mass settles into the Central Valley this weekend." - I hope this doesn't turn into a complete disaster. The San Joaquin Valley probably provides most of the fruits and vegetables you consume on a daily basis. If you find yourself wondering why oranges are so expensive later this year it could be because of this cold spell.

Out to pasture? - [11:34 AM]

BBC: "David Beckham will leave Real Madrid and join Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy at the end of the season." - American "Professional" Soccer could be seen as Triple-A baseball here in the states, you want to get to the "Show" not be demoted to Triple-A. I think that's what this equates to for Beckham. Time to retire dude.

Apple, big time WOWZER! - [1:47 PM]

Apple TV: "Ready to be entertained? Any time day or night, simply download what you want to watch or listen to from among millions of choices on the iTunes Store. Then let Apple TV do the rest." - Kim, honey, it's time we purchased that 24-inch iMac for our bedroom. The iMac plus Apple TV makes for a complete multi-media solution, not to mention I can develop Mac and Windows software on the same box!

Microsoft nothing new? - [1:17 PM]

Scripting News: "On Sunday, after waiting for hours to hear Bill Gates talk, I sat through the first half hour of the talk, and was amazed that they had nothing new to offer users. Just more empty words about how great Vista was. Gates even said we should care how much time and money they put into it. Why? I had left them between XP and Vista because they left their users to fend for themselves against all kinds of malware."

What to expect at MacWorld! - [2:26 PM]

McMahonWeb: "I have waited until now, merely one day before the “big event”, to throw my 2 cents into the murky waters of Macworld rumors. The difference is, I actually know what is going to happen. I know, you’ve heard a lot of speculation up until now, so I want to be the one to clear all that up, and help everyone understand what is coming, and how it all fits together. I can truely say, it’s nothing short of incredible." - Emphasis by me, no need to hear the keynote.

Let's hear it for the geeks! - [8:05 PM]

Caltech logoSI.com: "Coach Roy Dow and his squad of brainy -- as opposed to brawny -- Beavers beat Bard College of New York 81-52 on Saturday night, ending a mathematically improbable run of 207 consecutive NCAA Division III losses." - Who said geeks don't do sports!
