We pull into Gallup, New Mexico, at 10PM local time last night. Totally pooped out. 🥱
Today we’re off to Elk City, Oklahoma. Much shorter day. We’re only covering 563 miles. 🚙
It’s hard to believe it’s August 1. Even one day on the road makes me forget what day it is. 🤣
Will I be able to write Saturday Morning Coffee on the road? Guess we’ll find out. 😃
Yesterday Bug and I visited San Luis Obispo, California, one of the many places our family has lived over the years. It’s a beautiful little town on the Central Coast. It’s not what most people think of when they think of the California coastline. That’s usually reserved for Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco.
We stopped to walk around Higuera street and have lunch at Firestone Grill. If you’re ever in San Luis Obispo, stop by for a meal, you’ll enjoy it.
Bug got the tri-tip sandwich and I got a tri-tip Cobb. We split a basket of half fries, half onion rings.
Needless to say it was a fantastic lunch. 🤤

We start our journey back home today.
Today’s leg takes us from Avila Beach, California to Gallup, New Mexico.
Looks like 811 miles with an estimated time of around 12 hours. 🚙
It will, of course, take longer. 😃
Day Four.
We left Gallup, New Mexico at 6:30AM local time outbound to Fresno, California. We arrived in Fresno at 6:30PM local time. It works out to 13 hours becuase we had a shift in time from the Central time zone (CST) to Pacific (PST).
We covered 783 miles or 1260 kilometers. I’m happy to be out of the car.
I’ve had trouble sleeping on this trip for some reason. Last night I slept like a baby. I woke up at 5:30AM on my own, no alarm needed, which was nice.
While we’re here I’m trying to stay as close to Eastern time as possible so I can work with my co-workers on their time.
The nice thing about that is I’m off earlier because of the three hour time difference.
Today is a long one.
Gallop, New Mexico to Fresno, California.
Estimated 11 hours, 775 miles or 1,247 kilometers.
Day three, check. ✅
We blew out of Elk City, Oklahoma at 6AM and arrived in Gallup, New Mexico, at 3:15PM local time.
We covered 563 miles or 862 kilometers.
Tomorrow is another long drive. More in the morning.
Today we head to Gallup, New Mexico. I love the desert. Still tired. 😂
Day two in the books.
We arrived in Elk City, Oklahoma at 5PM local time, Saturday. It was a much shorter drive, we only covered 532 miles or 856 kilometers.
Being tired is kind of the norm on roadtrips for us but it feels really great to have a shorter day.
Today’s leg of the trip takes us from Forrest City, Arkansas, to Elk City, Oklahoma.
Short jaunt.
Day one in the books.
We pulled into Forrest City, Arkansas, at 8:30PM CST, so it was 9:30 in Charlottesville.
That comes to 14.5 hours of driving, including breaks for gas, food, and other things. Approximately 718 miles, or 1,155 kilometers.
We’re both pooped out. This is the longest day of the trip. Tomorrow will be quite a bit shorter but still productive.
Good night.
Our youngest daughter and I are headed out on our drive cross country to California.
Today we go from Charlottesville, Virginia to Forest City, Arkansas.
Total estimated time: 12h 2m
No Saturday Morning Coffee today. We’re still at the beach!
Here’s a picture of my Perfect Coffee.
Day four at the beach is in the books. The kids are tired, Kim and I are tired, everybody’s tired.
We’re having lunch at the trailer then I bet everyone takes a nap. 🤣
No beach tomorrow. Tomorrow we go inland a bit to a boardwalk of sorts and have a chill day. Some food, ice cream, whatever. Then we’ll pack up a bit and have a quiet evening.
Sunday we travel home. 🏡
Our grandson has started building his kingdom.
It’s time to do some camping! Kim and I picked up a new to us camping trailer.
We have a list of places we’d like to visit. Now we just need to pick one and go!
Most of the Fahrni clan.
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
A shot from Ripley’s Aquarium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Me, Kim, and Addi! 🏖️
The food will be simple but it’s the view we’re here for. That and the walk on the beach afterward.

Kim and Taylor had to take a little detour and visit Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo.
They’re having a great road trip! 🥳

Update from Taylor and Kim on the road to California. 🤣
